I used to watch old movies on Sundays. There was a certain formula to them–those period romantic dramas. This feels like one of those movies–in both a good and bad way. Good in that the story is there, Nicole Kidman is utterly believable and the sets/decoration is downright artful. Bad in that as soon as I got into it, there would be some sort of cliche scene–something that if you were doing a parody of an old romantic drama, that you’d highlight and mock. Like the uptight lady peeking at the rugged hero bathing. Or said rugged hero telling sassy lady to “do as you’re told”. it all seems contrived and a deliberate attempt to evoke nostalgia. Unnecessary, because without such things, the nostalgia would have been there more forcefully, wrapped in a warm blanket of good movie making.
